Will college coaches discover and recruit your kid just based on talent alone?

The answer is, probably not.

This depends a little bit on how good your kid is because if they're a phenom and they're on all the top rankings lists, they play for an elite travel or club team, or high school team then they're probably going to get found by college coaches no matter what you do. But this is only true for the top 1% of athletes and I’m not just talking about D1, but the top of D1 recruits.

For all the other athletes it's unlikely that a college coach is just going to find you. Now they will find somebody, but it might not be your kid. The problem is supply and demand because there are a small, limited number of scholarships and roster spots available and a huge number of athletes who both want those opportunities and are good enough for those opportunities. So essentially you have a situation where there are 10 athletes who are good enough for 2 spots and the question is how do they determine which 2 of those 10 athletes get those opportunities when the talent level is pretty much equal?

And the answer is, marketing!

And, if your kid isn’t in the top 1% of 1% athletes you have to actively put your kid in front of college coaches because they’re going to offer the players that make it easy for them, the ones that college coaches find first, the ones that make it really easy to communicate with coaches, the ones that have a slight edge here or a slight edge there.
