When Should You Start Recruiting? Earlier Than You Think.
Each sport has its own timeline—but the sooner you start building name recognition with college coaches, the better your chances. It’s never too early—or too late—to take action.
Does the recruiting process timeline differ by sport?
The answer is yes. There are general principles that apply to all sports, but each sport and each division has its own unique recruiting timeline determined by the NCAA, NAIA and Junior Colleges which establishes when college coaches can start recruiting players.
Lower-level schools like D3, NAIA, junior colleges can recruit much earlier than D1 and D2's, but what's ironic about this is that for a lot of sports D1 and D2 actually recruit earlier than the lower-level division schools. This happens because D3, NAIA and Junior Colleges tend to let D1 and D2's finalize their rosters and then they pick from all the players that are left.
For most sports the best time to get started is sophomore year. If you’re a junior or senior and you haven’t started, don't be discouraged because it’s not too late and college coaches are always looking for good players. If you’re a freshman it’s not too early, in fact it’s the perfect time to start building name recognition with college coaches.
Of all the sports, volleyball and lacrosse tend to recruit very early, so for those two sports specifically if you're not starting your recruiting your sophomore year you might be playing catch up but do it knowing that college coaches are always on the lookout for players that can help their team.
